Storm in the Mountains was painted by Albert Bierstadt at around 1870. This painting stood out to me the most as i really enjoyed the work that was done by Bierstadt. The way in which the dark ominous clouds can be seen in the distance really contrast nicely with the light in the foreground. I think this painting symbolizes the westward movement of the Americans because this fresh new land which in the painting is the foreground is soon to be destroyed by the rain and the storm that is coming in from the east. This is kind of a negative aspect of the American Identity, even though the westward movement shows Americas drive to conquer new lands and explore it also was a time of suffering for many especially the native americans who were previously on that land.
